Primary Curriculum

Curriculum at East Sussex Academy

At East Sussex Academy, our primary curriculum is ambitious, inclusive and carefully sequenced. It is adapted to pupils’ individual starting points so that gaps in learning are identified and addressed, while maintaining high expectations for every pupil.

Across all subjects, teaching is designed to help pupils build secure foundations, develop subject-specific knowledge and vocabulary, and prepare successfully for their next stage of education.

Phonics and Early Reading

We aim to ensure that every pupil develops the accurate decoding, fluency and comprehension skills needed to become a confident reader and access the wider curriculum. Pupils are assessed when they join the school and receive personalised daily teaching through the Read Write Inc. Fast Track programme. Sounds and blends are taught in a carefully sequenced way, with targeted practice used to address gaps in learning. Once pupils are secure in phonics, they develop their comprehension through accessible, age-appropriate texts and VIPERS questioning. Pupils close gaps in their phonics knowledge, read with increasing accuracy and fluency, and develop the vocabulary and comprehension skills needed for future learning.

English

Our English curriculum develops confident speakers, enthusiastic readers and effective writers. It provides pupils with the communication and literacy foundations they need to participate successfully in school and later life. Pupils engage with a rich range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Learning is progressively developed across speaking and listening, reading, writing, grammar and punctuation. Teaching is adapted to individual starting points, with earlier skills secured before pupils move on to more complex learning. Pupils become increasingly able to communicate clearly, understand and evaluate texts, and write accurately and purposefully for a range of audiences and contexts.

Mathematics

We aim to develop secure mathematical foundations, fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills so that pupils can use mathematics confidently in school and everyday life. Our curriculum follows the White Rose Maths small-steps approach and is adapted to pupils’ starting points. Concrete, pictorial and abstract approaches support progression through number, calculation, fractions, geometry, measures, statistics, ratio and algebra. Earlier mathematical knowledge is secured before pupils move on to more complex concepts. Pupils close gaps in their mathematical understanding, calculate with increasing fluency and apply their knowledge to reasoning and problem-solving. They are increasingly confident and prepared for their next stage of learning.

Science

Our science curriculum develops pupils’ knowledge of the natural and physical world while encouraging curiosity, scientific thinking and an understanding of how evidence can be used to answer questions. Through a two-cycle spiral curriculum, pupils revisit and deepen important concepts across biology, chemistry and physics. Enquiry questions, practical investigations and precise scientific vocabulary develop pupils’ skills in observation, classification, prediction, testing, recording and evaluation. Pupils build connected scientific knowledge, use increasingly sophisticated enquiry skills and explain their ideas using appropriate evidence and subject-specific vocabulary.

Computing

We aim to prepare pupils to participate safely, responsibly and confidently in an increasingly digital world. The curriculum progressively develops online safety, digital literacy, computer science and information technology. Pupils take part in practical activities including coding, digital art, data handling, spreadsheets, databases, presentations and digital communication. Online safety is revisited throughout the curriculum. Pupils use technology with increasing confidence and independence. They learn to create and debug programs, organise and interpret information, communicate responsibly and protect themselves and others online.

Art

Our art curriculum develops creativity, self-expression and an appreciation of how artists use materials, techniques and visual language to communicate ideas. Across two curriculum cycles, pupils explore drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, textiles, photography, mixed media and installation. Their technical knowledge, practical skills and artistic vocabulary become progressively more complex as they experiment, evaluate and refine their work. Pupils become increasingly confident and purposeful artists. They select materials and techniques appropriately, communicate their ideas creatively and evaluate and improve their own work.

Map work, fieldwork, atlases, climate information and data analysis support learning about human and physical geography, sustainability and environmental change. Pupils develop secure geographical knowledge, use maps and data with increasing confidence, and make informed comparisons and connections between places, people and environments.

History

We aim to develop pupils’ understanding of chronology, change, continuity and the ways in which the past has shaped modern life. Historical enquiry questions guide learning from personal and living memory to significant periods and civilisations. Pupils examine artefacts, photographs and historical sources, build chronological understanding and progressively develop their skills in comparison, interpretation and evaluation. Pupils develop increasingly detailed historical knowledge, use evidence to form reasoned conclusions and recognise that accounts of the past may reflect different viewpoints and interpretations.

The SCARF-based curriculum covers relationships, valuing difference, keeping safe, rights and responsibilities, physical and mental health, and growing and changing. Learning is revisited progressively and includes online safety, self-regulation, risk, healthy relationships and knowing how to seek help. Pupils develop the confidence and vocabulary to discuss wellbeing and relationships. They learn to recognise risk, make increasingly informed decisions and identify trusted people and sources of support.

Citizenship and Life Skills

We aim to prepare pupils to become responsible, respectful and active citizens who can contribute positively to their school, community and wider society. Learning progresses from caring for others and the environment to rights, responsibilities, democracy, law, community participation, careers, enterprise and financial education. Practical activities develop teamwork, decision-making, leadership and responsible choice-making. Pupils develop greater independence, social responsibility and awareness of their role within the community. They understand how their choices can affect themselves, other people and the environment.

Cooking and Nutrition

Our cooking and nutrition curriculum equips pupils with the knowledge and practical skills needed to make healthy, safe and increasingly independent choices about food. Pupils progressively learn about food sources, hygiene, balanced diets, food groups, nutrients, allergens, sustainability and meal planning. Practical teaching develops the safe use of tools, accurate measuring, food preparation, cooking and recipe adaptation. Earlier knowledge and skills are regularly revisited. Pupils prepare food with increasing confidence and independence. They understand the principles of healthy eating and make more informed decisions about nutrition, food safety and sustainability.
